A Message from the Pastor

We are delighted that you have stopped to visit our web page. Let me take this opportunity to introduce you to our church.

We are a group of believers in Christ who are committed to God’s Word. We believe that God speaks through His Word and we gather together to worship and hear His holy Word every Lord’s Day. Our worship services follow a simple method taught in the Scriptures, beginning with a call to worship, followed by the singing of Scriptural-based proven hymns, the consecutive reading of the Scriptures, the prayer for the work of the Kingdom and for the needs of the people, and the hearing of a sound exposition of God’s Word from selected passages. Our aim through worship services is to seek the glory of God in every sermon and we call on people to repent and believe in Jesus Christ for their salvation.

God has been kind to our congregation over the years to maintain a witness to Him in Auckland and elsewhere. Our congregation is represented by people from various ethnic backgrounds. We endeavour to walk according to God’s Word and to love Him and love one another. If the Lord leads you to visit us we would be delighted to see you at one of our worship services to join us in the praise and worship of our Maker.

Our History

During the 1970s, a group of believers met to plant a church in the east Auckland area. They initially met in the house of a believer. Eventually the present property in No. 3 Lunn Avenue, Mt Wellington, Auckland, was purchased and Sovereign Grace Church was established. The church, having been without a regular full time pastor for several years, called Pastor Bala in 1986. He was inducted as pastor of the church in December 1986 and has been in this position ever since. Mr. Warrick Snowball and Mr. Grant Lincoln were appointed as deacons later and continue to serve in that position.

Meet our Leaders

Pastor Bala followed his theological training at the South Wales Bible College, Barry, UK. In December 1986 he accepted a call to be the Pastor of the Sovereign Grace Church, and he has remained in that position for the past 36 years. He and his wife Sharmini have two children. In 1990 the Lord led Pastor Bala to take up mission endeavours in some of the South-Eastern and Asian countries. Each year he makes regular visits to these countries to establish churches, train up men for the ministry and to speak at both Family and Pastors’ conferences. In addition he publishes a quarterly magazine called Bible Lamp in the Tamil language which is sent to many countries. He also translates English books into Tamil and has written several books and booklets on various theological and practical subjects, along with a regular monthly article submitted to the Bible Lamp website.
